Need some ideas about flowers...........?

I just moved in to my new home and I am wanting to find some pretty flowers to plant in a flower bed on both sides of my porch. I love red and blue flowers. I don't know much at all about this stuff. It will be my first time this coming spring to make a flowerbed. I do want flowers that will come up on their own next year after winter. Any ideas?

It is difficult to answer unless we know what growing zone you're in, but I'm assuming something like zone 5 because you talked about flowers coming up after winter. Perennials or flowering bushes are what you need. For red, you could mix day lilies and peonies, or use just red flowering bushes such as weigelia (Red Prince is a great red) or some azaleas, depending on the amount of sun vs. shade (not too much sun for most northern growing azaleas). Blues aren't quite as numerous as reds, but my first choice--again depending on not too much sun--would be a hydrangea. They are bushes that can be trimmed, split, and even have their color changed or mixed with certain chemical applications. Best of all, go to a library or online and check out the possibilities.
Reply:Plant Rhodedendron bushes. they have gorgeous big flowers, and they are really hearty. they grow pretty big too, and they can live in the snow and extreme heat.
Reply:If you live in the west, plant catmint and Russian sage. They are xeriscape (require little water) perennials (come up year after year) and spread like crazy. I suggest highcountrygardens.com - they have a wonderful collection of western xeriscape plants that they will mail to you.
Reply:We would love to help, but any answers may be misleading unless we know where you live. What does well in Texas may not be so hot in Connecticut, you know?
Reply:go to your local Lowe's or home depot in the coming month's and they have all the perennials you need
Reply:Go to your local garden center and ask this qustion, because we need to know what zone you live in.
