How do florists colour real flowers artificially? For example.. make a white rose bright blue?

I am not talking about flowers that are normally that colour, I just bought some roses for my Mother the other day and you can tell that they were somehow dyed blue leaves and all, I was wondering how they do this.... I mean do they dip the flowers in dye(if so what kind) or do they somehow add something to soil or water to make them grow a different colour??

With hydrangeas, if you alter the pH of the soil they will grow different colors. If the soil os acidic the will grow blue, and if it is basic, the will grow pink. My next door neighbor is a gardener and he added aluminum to the soil to make them them blue.
Reply:I don't know about all florists but for our wedding we used a lot of blues (and not many flowers come in blue) so our florist actually spray painted the different flowers we liked the various shades of blue we wanted. And they looked terrific - not cheap or fake in any way. I hope that helps! :)





Wow I hadn't heard about dying them with food coloring - that is a great idea too! :)
Reply:They dip the stems in the color of food coloring and somehow after a few days the stem uptakes the dye and changes the flower to that color.

Put it in a vase filled with water.


Place blue food coloring in the water.





Wait a day or two.

Reply:They put their stems in colored water and the water is sucked up through the stems where it is stored on the petals. This changes the color of the flower.

Blue is not a natural flower color.
Reply:If you put a cut white rose in blue (from dye) water, it will turn blue.

Put some food coloring in water in a glass, then clip off the end a flower stem, like a white carnation, and put the stem in the water. After a matter of hours, you'll start to see the color go up into the flower.


If you want to get fancy, you can put 2 glasses next to each other with different colors, and split the bottom of the flower stem. Put the 2 parts into the 2 glasses.


As the flower dries, it absorbs water from the glass, taking the coloring with it.
Reply:you put dye in the water and the dye gets soaked up along with the water right into the pedals of the flower. for which dye to use, im not sure but you can ask the florist. i've done it before and i just used food coloring. good luck, hope it turns out good! :)
